Use Food to Improve Your Mood

Most of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are terrible and must be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that basically can improve your moods when you eat them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at fighting back depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, particularly the yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you raise your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Consume an egg and feel happier!

Put together a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which increases serotonin production. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a terrific source of protein.

Cold water fish are good if you wish to feel happier. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.

Grains can be great for driving away a bad mood. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to improve your mood. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you feel famished! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You were simply anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel so much healthier. Now you know that green tea helps you to elevate your moods as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
