How to Boost Your Mood with Food
Most of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we must avoid them. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really nutritious and good for you. There are several foods that, when you eat them, could boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a few of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to raise your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Eat a couple of eggs to jolly up!
Put together a trail mixfrom different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent if you want to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
It’s not difficult to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you have a happier mood. They can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. It’s easy to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You were just expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body.
