Use Food to Elevate Your Mood
In general, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at fighting back depression. You must make sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for elevating your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Eat some eggs to cheer up!
Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Nuts, along with elevating your mood, can be a superb protein source.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. These are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Grains can be great for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you feel better. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling hungry can be terrible! These grains can elevate your mood since it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest these foods faster than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is truly great for your mood. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel a lot healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood also!
As you can see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you wish to feel better! Try some of these instead!
