Use Food to Boost Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we should keep away from them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. A number of foods actually do boost your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you battle depression. You must see to it, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat a few eggs to jolly up!

Put together a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to boost your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, along with bettering your mood, can be a super source of protein.

Cold water fish are good if you would like to feel happier. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.

Some grains are really great for repelling bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can actually bring you down! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest these grains more quickly than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be so much healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these tips instead.
