Foods That Make You Happy

In general, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to find out, are great at combating depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you boost your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Try eating an egg and jolly up!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which increases your production of serotonin. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, along with raising your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you are wanting to be in a better mood. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you fight your depression.

It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, which is a mood improver. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! These grains can elevate your mood since it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood sugar which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you feel better. Now you know that green tea helps you to raise your moods as well!

You can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try a few of these suggestions instead.
